Her eyes were still half-closed when she flipped her shop sign 'Open', the sound of automatic mechanisms beginning to whir in the background while the hybrid shopkeeper sipped her daily dose of tea to begin the day. All around, the darkness brought forth by dawn was fading and slowly being replaced by sunlight that peeked through the shop's closed windows, waiting for Aradessa to press open the button that would let the rays fully shine through.
"Rise and shine, Yushan." Aradessa muttered sleepily, a lopsided smile curving up on her face. With one press of the button by the shop counter, all windows and the single door by the front opened wide, letting in the fresh breeze that seemed surprisingly prominent, even for a place as big as Haru.
She took another sip of her tea before yawning--it had already been months since she first set up shop in Haru, but she still had to get accustomed to waking up earlier than she was used to. Groggily walking towards her nearby workshop, Aradessa set her cup down and began working on her latest commission: an “alarm” clock, as her client had so subtly described. She’d begun building it yesterday evening, so thankfully it was halfway done—or is it three-fourths done? Aradessa wished her mind was as awake as her body right now...maybe she just needed more tea?
Accordingly, she took another sip of her tea as she scrutinized the unfinished device in front of her. Her client was a fellow shopkeeper himself, albeit his products were more prone to robbery than hers, and so he had asked for the same alarm system Aradessa had installed in her shop--specifically, an alarm system that would wake him up at night.
Hence an alarm clock.
The hybrid found herself snorting in amusement. The old guy was terrible at puns.
Cracking her neck from side to side, she began tinkering with the intricate mix of wood, iron and string. It was a complicated thing, all right, designed to be hung atop the front door with a small, almost invisible piece of wire to help activate the alarms as well as the surprise attack. Aradessa couldn't help but grin--One trip from the unsuspecting thief and boom, they'd be thrown out of the door in no time.
It took half an hour at most, a record to which Aradessa prided herself in, most especially because it had been done while she was still sleepy. Gingerly, the inventor hefted up the device and set it up on her front door, replacing her own alarm system. Test it on yourself before you test it on others.
BOOM!
Aradessa didn't exactly remember how it happened, but she was definitely going to blame it on sleep.
All she knew was that she had felt some sort of flat force slapping her right in the face and sending her tumbling down in front of her own shop. If she hadn't known any better, she wouldn't have immediately stood up and belted out a triumphant "YES!"
Much to the weird looks of the passers-by, of course. It prompted Aradessa to smile sheepishly and give an assuring nod. "I'm okay, I'm okay! Don't mind me, please."

his morning started like any other morning: a lot of shouting, moaning, fumbling and sleepwalking from room to room, until somehow Jae-ha managed to get himself dressed and outside (needless to say the day was bound to start as a bit of a disaster if he couldn't achieve those two final points... not that he does... nowadays at least). Anywho, with his trousers securely on, he started the day passing by several of the merchants to collect the freshly delivered groceries for the kitchen. He started off with amazing speed and efficiency (at this stage in the morning something kicked in and he somewhat akin to was a bouncing ball of energy) but as the weight in hand increased after each stop- he suddenly wished he hadn't given up all physical classes during his teenage years. And now he stood face to face with his greatest enemy: stairs. He put on his determined face, rolled up his sleeves to reveal to pathetic amount of muscle barely clinging onto the bone and prepared the great ascent to the palace.BOOOOOOM"AAAAAAAAAAAAARGHHH!" In a shriek only audible to dolphins (he wasn't sure about that fact though, he'd seen a drawing of one once and heard they spoke in squeaky voices? Anyway... the scream was very squeaky....), Jae-ha dropped everything in hand.
He turned around to see a young girl. He looked at her horrified. Was she alive?! Was she under attack??!! ohdearohdearohdearohdear this was too much excitement for the early morning.
Despite her reassurance, Jae-ha couldn't help but approach her. Just to check she really was okay. He couldn't imagine what situation an explosive would be fun. Unless it was fireworks... Was she making fireworks? His interest suddenly piqued- he skipped over to the girl. "Did you explode your house for fun? Or is there something wrong?.... Can I help you?" He asked innocently.

Brushing the dust off her slightly disheveled clothes, Aradessa was about to enter her shop to disassemble the alarm when she heard a barely-audible squeak pass by. Understandably, the hybrid's ears twitched in curiosity--maybe she had added a sound feature to the alarm? It certainly seemed useless, however; no one would even wake up to a sound as quiet as that.
(Or maybe they would...the sound was akin to that of a rat's and Aradessa doubted anyone would be able to sleep through if they knew there was a rat in their house)
For a quick while, the inventor just stood there and began contemplating the many repercussions a rat could cause--and by extension, the schematics of an anti-rat device. It was definitely going to be something simple, and Aradessa smiled at the thought of being able to outsmart those pests for onc--
The concerned voice of a young man cut her off from her thoughts, and when Aradessa turned to look at the source of the sound she was met with an innocent face. Aradessa was a bit surprised that someone could manage to look so pure. Tilting her head slightly to the left, she realized that somewhere across the man's back was a plethora of spilled goods--it didn't take Aradessa long to put two and two together.
"O-oh! My apologies!" was her first reply, heading over to help with the spilled goods that were mostly likely her fault. "Did I startle you with my alarm system? I think I most likely did, I'm so sorry! And it's not a problem, I'm all fine, really! I believe it's you and these goods that need help!"
His first question, the one Aradessa forgot to answer, elicited a chuckle from the inventor. "I'd like to think of it as fun, yeah. I'm used to it, don't worry! It happens in my shop everyday, and by now my neighbors understand that the area really isn't under attack..." Memories of her first day in Haru sent a shudder through Aradessa's spine. That one definitely wasn't fun. Looking back at the harmless-looking man, the inventor's eyes squinted slightly in curiosity. "I don't think I've seen you pass by here before though...if you'd been a frequenter here I'm sure you would've just skipped by me and my explosions. Newcomer to Haru?"

larm system?" Jae-ha pulled a face as he tried to think about what that was. Did they have one in the palace? He was sure the palace must have everything... but he certainly hadn't come across it. "I've never heard of one of those but it alarmed me so I think it works pretty well?" He confirmed for her. Maybe it was to wake people up? He was a little disappointed it wasn't fireworks but this alarm system seemed interesting enough. He wasn't quite sure why you needed to alarm people though? It seemed quite abrupt for waking someone.
She pointed behind him and said something about groceries but Jae-ha was completely absorbed in this alarm system and didn't think about looking behind him.
He stared at the girl in amazement. So did she alarm people as her occupation? It didn't sound like something Jae-ha would like constantly but she seemed nice enough so they could be friends as long as the alarming stuff wasn't going off constantly. "So umm... do you do alarming on a regular basis? An alarmer? An alarming... person...thing job?" He asked her, eyes twinkling with curiosity. Yes. She could be his new friend. They would get on very well, he decided. It's been a while since he met someone new in Haru. She could tell him all about these alarm systems and he would soak it all up.
She should come round to visit!!
"New? Me? Nah, I've been here... most of my life? I think? II'm not sure... I live just there though!" He pointed up the stairs towards the palace. "I have a room and a pool and some fish, you should come round one of these days." He smiled brightly, hoping she would jump up at the offer.

So, nevermind the spilled goods then...Aradessa could've sworn he was heading for the palace stairs, which made her conclude that the food must be for the palace kitchens, which meant that she'd just screwed herself over.
But meh, leave the goods along the sidewalk then.
Now, onto more pressing matters...The inventor gazed back at the young man with a mix of amusement and interest. Aradessa had never seen anyone else use the same word five times in one fluid conversation--the guy seemed to be pretty invested in her device right at that moment.
Good. Potential customer right there. More stuff to build.
Aradessa, being the shameless advertiser that she tended to be when asked of her inventions, gladly proceeded to explain to the man the intricacies of the machine that just slapped her in the face. "I should probably name it something else, maybe something like boomer...or squeaker--it did emit that kind of sound a while ago," she remarked with humor in her tone, evidently poking at the man's repetitive use of the word 'alarm'. "It's a device designed to keep thieves at bay...and inventors, apparently. Which I am, because being an 'alarmer' certainly feels like a boring occupation compared to, you know, building stuff."
She was about to ask him about what he did for a living when he pointed right up at the palace, by which point Aradessa looked back at the man to review his face. Sure, she had a hunch that he was a palace-goer but...had she been talking to a noble all this time? He did mention a pool--wasn't that something only the higher-ups would have? Aradessa couldn't help but squint.
He didn't seem like the type...
The way he casually invited her upstairs, however, further strengthened Aradessa's suspicions. "You are aware that, as someone who doesn't work inside the palace in any way, I'm not allowed to enter it, right?" she asked, not really sure if the guy truly was aware. She wasn't even sure why he was inviting her, a stranger, in the first place. Was this a custom in Yushan that she didn't know about? It caused confusion to wrinkle around the hybrid's nose.

ae-ha listened as she explained Ah- she wasn't an alarmerer-thing. Well that made everything even better then! He looked at the invention as she talked about it. As she talked about the naming- given the choices, Jae-ha was certain which of the two he preferred. Weelll if I were in a shop, I would buy a 'squeaker' over a 'boomer'. It sounds like something a bit scary to sleep with something that has the word 'boom' in your house..." He reasoned, fairly seriously at this stage. After all, if she was asking him to help with the naming of her latest product- then he wanted to give her the best possible advice. He had never been asked such a big important question before... he felt very proud and excited to be a part of this invention now though.
He had never met an inventor before... He had tried being one for a week when he was trying to figure out a filter system to keep the fish tank clean... ooh and then that one time he had tried to make himself a transport system so he could get around his room with his tail. Maybe she could help him out if she had been going at it for longer than he had?
"Soooo you're an inventor?" He asked, peering over at the shop behind them. "Do you have all your inventions in the shop? Do you maybe have some kind of thing which lets you slide around the floor on your stomach? Because I wanted one of those but I''m not really sure where I can get one... but if you're around here now, then maybe you can help! Right?" He quickly searched in his pocket for the coins he had brought along. What was that? 200 dan? 280? Could that buy him an invention? It could buy him two cinnamon rolls in the bakery. Were there inventions worth that amount?
Aoi had warned him about bringing too much money with him when he left the palace. Apparently he could never win 'chase the lady' (which confused Jae-ha since it was a game based on skill and there was always a one-in-three chance of guessing right anyway?) and even if he didn't feel like playing, apparently people weren't always honest when they asked for money from him? Although Jae-ha was certain he only ever gave it to those in need. A swindler wouldn't be able to go into so much detail.
"If you were making me something though, then they'd let you in? I just have to drop-"
Oh.
He whipped around to see groceries scattered about the pavement. He took a small intake of air as he realised what he had done. He held his breath. He hardly blinked for a the next few seconds whilst he tried to figure out what he should do. Would the kitchen know he had dropped them? The serving aunties always said that a little dirt was a good boost for your system and they really did know everything...
"Give me one moment-" he excused himself and hurriedly set to putting the goods back in their bags.

A squeaker.
Aradessa smiled.
It would be an ironic invention, yes indeed. Especially considering that the device itself wouldn't be the one squeaking--no, it would be very useless if it made a sound as weak as that. It had to emit a loud, an alarmingly loud sound; one that would wake up its owner in a whim and make him squeak in surprise.
That, by extension, includes the thief.
"Oh, my products? I don't usually make premades, but I've got a few of the simpler ones displayed inside. The bigger devices, I usually make after the customer requests them. More often, though, my clients ask for specifics instead." Aradessa was delighted that someone was taking interest in her shop--half the time all everyone did was shoot a weird look the White Raven's way. She didn't deny that it was different from most buildings, with its very messy colorfully-painted walls and its constant explosions (she had to construct the shop herself), but she just wished people would see through the first impression.
"As for that...thing you described...I don't believe that exists anywhere. Unless you count oil, I think, but everyone knows that it's more messy than useful." she added laughingly, although the image of said thing was already forming in her mind. The guy said he needed something to roll around? Then what he needs is wheels--although what kind of wheels and where to put them, Aradessa was yet to figure out. "But, this can be arranged, of course. I'll be happy to help with this thing of yo--oh no, hey, don't pull out your money yet! We don't even know what this uh...thing would look like."
She really needed to give the project a name. "Thing" was sounding a bit less normal and a lot more dubious.
On the other hand, the young man's naive enthusiasm was also getting a bit concerning--maybe in another world where he wasn't talking to Aradessa right this second, he would've probably been mugged. One does not simply pull out money from his pockets in front of a stranger, especially if his pockets seemed to be tinkling more than the average person.
Aradessa's hunch was getting righter and righter with each second--this guy was definitely a noble. Albeit maybe a questionable one, but then again some nobles were stereotypically gullible--Aradessa had encountered the type more than once while living in Tuya, and she wasn't really sure whether to be concerned or exasperated by their lives. Maybe the former, unless the noble was a dick, of course.
"You seem very adamant in bringing me to the palace," she remarked, raising an eyebrow. It was a bit strange, if not immensely amusing. Aradessa wasn't sure which feeling to pick. "Don't get me wrong, I'd love to, but--"
She stopped in her tracks, watching as the man's expression blinked in an inkling of...was that panic? It didn't take her long to connect two-and-two together, following the man towards the spilled goods and kneeling down to help. "I tried telling you earlier but you were probably still in shock from the explosion," she says with a chuckle, picking up a few carrots. "Then again I feel that it's still my fault, so I feel obligated to correct this mistake."
With most if not all goods enclosed around both their clutches, Aradessa tilted her neck to point at the shop. "I can wash these vegetables off if you want? We'll still need to work out how to clean up the...unwashable ones but your vegetables and meat are safe!"

smile of gratitude played on his lips as he saw Aradessa rescuing a couple of carrots from the road. He left for less than a second to chase a couple of sprouts that had been kicked along the road and proceeded to scoop up the last of the onions and stuck them all back in the bag. He peered in, doing a quick run off of all the ingredients he had been sent out to retrieve. There were a few unaccounted for groceries but all in all... it seemed okay?
At least Jae-ha was largely satisfied with it.
As Aradessa brought back the carrots, Jae-ha gave a quick little bow to show his appreciation. "That's okay, you don't have to feel obligated or anything... but thank you very much for your help! I'd be a lot worse off if I was bringing back carrot soup. I think they everyone's expecting roasted carrots today? I can't really remember... but anyway, it should be fiiine like this. I'm sure the kitchen wash it anyway." He smiled reassuringly, looking at what was left. Only the odd leaf and squished sprout was left to decorate the paved roads of Haru and the birds were already disposing of the evidence.
Great! So that was all fixed now.
"But anyway- back to more important matters. I can say from experience that oil is indeed very messy. It works okay... It's just the kitchen don't let me use it anymore so I need to think of something new." He explained, glad that they were on the same wavelength when it came to solutions. And that they both seemed to have understood the difficulties of using oil to drag yourself across the floor. He was looking forwards to what she was thinking of as a solution- after all, as an inventor she must be a great thinker.
Maybe it would be some great flying machine? So he would be the first flying fish in Hanami? Or maybe a crane he could control from his pool? Oooh or maybe a miniature horse to pull a small carriage-like thing through the corridors?
He was prepared to be astounded.
Just then, the clock tower sounded the imminent arrival of the sixth hour- a warning that the day would be starting soon for everyone else and preparations needed to be coming to an end. "Ack-" He sounded as he was once again reminded today was not a holiday... "I need to take these up there, so we'll have to talk about all this later!" He suggested brightly as he tried to gather up all the bags in his hands, struggling to get a firm grasp on everything with his small hands.
She seemed anxious to approach the palace, so he'd happily give her name so she could ask for him. "If you don't want to come all the way to the palace, you can always ask for me when you have some ideas! I'm Song Jae-ha, like ex-Chancellor Song Ji-Min but people don't talk about mom so much anymore... but they'll know who Songgie or Fish-face is if you'd rather ask for me like that?" He smiled at her, glad to have added to his friends in Haru. "I'm so happy I met you though! I'm sure we'll be great friends! I've always wanted to meet an inventor!"
Now to get to the top of those stairs in record time...

"If you say so!" Even then, despite the guy's assurances, Aradessa still took a quick step inside her shop, "But, I still want to at least help you out!" Her voice echoed from inside the building, and one could hear a few shuffling of items as if she was trying to search for a certain device. The inventor was remembering an old, unused invention of hers, one that would definitely be able to help the man.
Aha!
Reappearing on the door again, Aradessa triumphantly held a light, wooden device in her hands. One could say that it was a wagon, complete with a container and wheels, except it was smaller and meant to be pulled, not pushed. Aradessa had also proudly given it a lid, so that any contents wouldn't fall of easily. "This is something I made for a client who's uh...long dead by now--but it's still useful!" Aradessa remarked, dropping the vegetables on her hands inside the "wagon" and demonstrating to the guy on how to use it. "For now, I want you to take it hostage both because my apology to you owes this much, and also bcause I'm building you a device and we'll have to meet again one day."
When the guy once again brought up the subject of oil, Aradessa couldn't stifle the laugh that came afterwards--it was easy to discern that, based on what the man had said, he must have used oil once to temporarily solve his little problem. To her it had been just a quick guess, but she never actually expected it to be a tried (and most likely failed) solution. The inventor gave a small grin--she was liking this guy already.
As for the yet-to-be-made device...Aradessa had a pretty vague picture of what it could be--she squinted around for some quick inspiration until--
Her eyes landed on the "wagon".
The inventor grinned, an invisible lightbulb popping up her head.
"It seems you won't be needing oil, after all." she remarked, "Yes, yes! What you need is wheels, Mister--"
It was then that she realized--she hadn't caught his name, and that meant she didn't introduce herself either. "Ack, apologies, how rude of me--Song Jae-ha, yes?" She'd heard of the ex-Chancellor before, but it wasn't vast enough to know that she had a son. "The name's Aradessa, Aradessa Gavrani, local inventor of Haru."
Jae-ha's last remark, however, sent a feeling of slight confusion in the inventor. After all, how could he know so quickly that they'd be great friends? He seemed so...sure, and that's what intrigued Aradessa. Besides, doesn't it always start with acquaintances, or was there something that she missed? Maybe the latter--she had always acknowledged the fact that she was clueless when it comes to these certain kinds of things.
Despite that, a small bow is given, followed by another one of her lopsided smiles. "I-It's nice to meet you as well, Song Jae-ha! I'll be sure to remember your name once I take a visit to the palace for this...device of yours." The mere ideas already floating in her head made Aradessa enthusiastic. Yes, she was definitely going to get to work on it the moment she had the opportunity. "Now, you best be going--the palace cooks must be waiting and with me beginning to work on your request right this second, I want this invention to be a surprise."

radessa rushed inside to look for something and Jae-ha stared curiously after her. He wanted to follow her and take a look around her store. Imagine all the toys and games that an actual inventor would have stashed away in their house! Oh it was so very exciting~ Was she actually brainstorming this instant? Was he allowed to watch? He took a step forward before looking between his vegetables, the stairs and the inviting shop front. What time was it again?
He took a step forwards anyway, his curiosity beating any sense of duty he might have had.
But the inventor burst out before he had the chance to see what was inside. Though he wasn't disappointed, rather he was captivated by the strange device she seemed to be carrying on her. Well, it looked like a box with wheels... but she had just taken it out of her magical workshop so he was certain this was no ordinary box with wheels.
Would it fly? Would it hover above the ground? Did it have an unbreakable seal to keep his secret diary in?
As she opened the lid, Jae-ha's face brightened in realisation as to what she wanted him to use it for. He could wheel around all his groceries and be done at half the speed now. "Thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouuuu~! How has this not become the most popular household object in Hanami already? " Jae-ha exclaimed as he helped her fill the rest of it with his groceries.
He helped put the vegetables in there and gave a little test run, pushing and pulling it along the sidewalk. She said something about him needing wheels but he was already having too much fun with this. "So would I get a giant one of these to sit in and wheel myself around?!" His eyes lit up. "If the wheels were big enough, I could turn them from inside the box!"
That sounded like fun.
"Aradessa Gavoroni-" He repeated, kind of mumbling through her last name but eventually managing to spew out something that sounded fairly similar. Either way, he was much better with faces and he wouldn't forget hers. It sounded nice though, like the kind of name bards would sing about. It had the same nice flow to it. "Well Aradessa, I'm glad I met you today. I do have some work to do though so I'll be off then! It was great to meet you to!" He said with an excited wave as he turned to lug his little wagon up the stairs before almost tripping over the first obstacle.
Ah, it didn't fly over the stairs as easily as he had pictured.
