looks
To put it nicely, Jae-ha has a delicate and petite figure. Though he’s more used to words like weedy, gangly, scrawny and twig-like. Among his peers, he reaches a meagre 1.60cm and he barely has enough muscle to give him any real shape. When he was growing up, he had extremely dry skin. As he was spending most of his time out of the water, he would scrub off the scales as they started growing back so he would not have to shift back into his merfolk form- leaving his skin with a dull, rough and uneven texture. His wide eyes and thick lips seemed far too big for his small face and his close-cropped black hair was not the most flattering look either. In fact, it got to the point where Jae-Ha preferred to hide the fact that he was a merfolk to avoid the questions and confusion he was confronted with when people told him they thought merfolk were supposed to have an ethereal beauty to them.
Though few have seen him in his merfolk form, they have been quick to point out that he does seem to change entirely underwater. He has a very long tail, easily adding another 50cm to his length. His tail is a silver colour with a pearly white colour highlighting the tips of his fin and his wide fan tail. He has a pearl-coloured high dorsal fin growing along his spine. Although he’s still noticeably thin, he moves with a certain grace that he lacks on land and gives him a more elegant look as opposed his usual awkward one.
These days, Jae-ha has been spending more and more time in his merfolk form, doing wonders for his skin. There is still some minor scarring where he damaged his skin but it has a smoother feel and look to it. He has grown into his features better, looking less like a human anchovy and more... just more natural. Adding insoles into his boots has also helped with his height, adding a good 3cm for him to seem less insignificant and pathetic. He has also allowed his hair to grow a little more, just keeping it short enough to keep it out of his eyes. He’s still far from a heartthrob but he certainly looks a thousand times better than he did growing up.

charms
Jae-ha seems relatively unaffected by the struggles of the world. In fact, he seems to get through life fairly easily with his boundless energy and optimism and a stupid smile plastered on his face all the while. If there's an opportunity to mess around and have fun, you can be certain that Jae-ha will be at the centre of it all... or he would've been. For the sake of the empress' image, he has been trying to practice some self-control (semi-successfully). He's someone who is eager to please and to entertain others, even at the expense of embarrassing himself=.
With a refreshingly laid-back personality in the palace, Jae-ha doesn't struggle socially nowadays. He is a supportive and honest friend to have and has been noted for his loyalty and the trust he places in his friends. Of course, it's also no wonder that there aren't a lot of people as trusting and naïve as Jae-ha when it's a well-known fact that a substantial part of his earnings end up in the pockets of swindlers and con artists. Many others would refer to this aspect of his personality as plain stupidity. His deep relationships with his friends leave him very vulnerable mentally and he is very easily hurt by those he trusts. He is quick to cry and to sulk when he's upset, lending more to the childish image a lot of people have about him.
Honestly, Jae-ha is not an idiot and is semi-aware of what goes on around him. The tension, corruption and animosity of being at the heart of the empire's politics is something he has come to accept that he will never escape. And so, amidst it all- he has done his best to make himself at home and give himself some peace of mind. He isn't so concerned if his sanity comes at the cost of a few gold coins or passing remarks on his childish behaviour. Not having a family of his own, he treats many of his friends like they were brothers or sisters to him and has always worked hard to make them happy as well.
Politics and fighting are of little interest to Jae-ha though he keeps himself brushed up on what he is required to know in his position. He spends most of his free time listening to music and composing. Ever since he was younger, he wanted to be a performer and to dance for an audience. It was always made clear to him that it was his duty to serve and repay what he owed to the imperial household , which meant pursuing his own hobbies and fantasies was definitely ruled out as a future job prospect- but he still loves to dream. He used to enjoy playing the erhu as well, but has recently given that up in favour of developing his singing as he has taken an interest in magic. Being alone is something Jae-ha used to be terrified of, but over the years has grown very accustomed to it and now is rather impressive at entertaining himself (if he dare say so himself).
There are still a lot of things that Jae-ha is scared of, and anything involving the words 'scary', 'haunted' or 'creepy' is likely not going to sit well with him. He equally dislikes large, open areas as it makes him feel too exposed and vulnerable.

past
Oshima Akira was born the only child and heir of the Oshima family of Ryo. He was a well-loved child and spoiled to the bone. He was sensitive as a child, swinging between moods at a moment's notice but most of all he demanded attention. It was Yuta who took care of most of Akira's upbringing but he longed for his mother more than anything; everything he did was to please her.
When Akira turned three, his mother took him for his first visit to the palace. He had no understanding of what was going on around him, but was simply happy to be with his mother and very excited about how it felt to walk around on two legs instead of using a tail. Once Izumi finished her business, they toured the surrounding region before boarding the ship back home (having a couple days left before their tails would grow back). However they were caught by a storm whilst out on the seas. Scared by the violence of the storm, Akira left his room to find his mother. He stepped out on deck and didn't have the opportunity to make a sound before he was thrown overboard.
It was on that very day that the ex-Chancellor, Song Ji-Min, had arrived at her seaside residence in Yushan to bid farewell to her child. Her son, Song Jae-ha, had caught a fever and through unforeseen complications had fallen ill very quickly and passed away before she saw him. She scattered his ashes into the sea and prayed for a second chance from the gods, unable to live with the regret and guilt as a neglectful parent.
The next morning when the storm had passed, Ji-Min found a boy washed up onto her shores. He must have been the same age as her son and not too dissimilar. She took him in and nursed him back to health for the next month, becoming more and more certain that this was the second chance that she had prayed for. She called the child Song Jae-ha and would continue to raise him as her child, careful not to make the same mistakes. She let him swim in the lake in the residence and took charge of his education herself. When he was healthy she returned to the capital to take up her position again. Only to hear of the anger and fury of Oshima Izumi after she lost her child to the sea and her efforts to find him. It would have taken an idiot not to put two and two together, but Ji-Min was not going to lose her child and in a split-second decision. She sent for her son to be brought to the palace, keen to keep him as far from the sea and as close to her as she could manage.
She brought him with her when he was in his human form, he attended parties and other social events and some lessons but when he grew out his tail again, he was hidden in a small room behind the servant quarters where there was a small pool for him to use. The chancellor and household staff visited him for lessons and for his meals. Though between those hours, Jae-ha was left alone and he grew to hate the room with a passion. He would often cry for someone to stay with him or hold his hand, but the 5 minutes longer that the staff stayed with him out of pity was not enough. Desperate to be with others, Jae-ha started shedding his tail as often as he could so he could stay by the maids who looked after him (his mother often too busy or too angry to see him wandering around the palace). Whether the maids were sleeping, working or doing personal errands, Jae-ha would stay by them, being as quiet and helpful as he could manage in order not to be sent back to his room.
However, they were eventually found out. Jae-ha was seen in his mermaid form and it didn't take long for the Emperor and his ministers to understand what had happened. Jae-ha was never told what had happened to the ex-Chancellor but she took her own life before anyone could confront her. Leaving the problem of what to do with Jae-ha. There was a strong motion put forwards to dispose of him, avoiding any problems that could arise between them and Sumi. Yesun opposed the motion strongly. He spared the boy but understanding that he himself was old and weak, he did not want his daughter to inherit the wrath and fury of the Sumuri if they were to find out that their heir had been living in Haru all this time.
Nobody wanted to be responsible for the child, fearing what would happen if the Oshima family were to find out. And so, Jae-ha was given to the maids who had looked after him in Ji-Min's service and was taken on as a serving boy within the palace. He was moved to the servant quarters, where he shared the room with several other children his age. Having never lived with others his own age, he was slow to open up to his new roommates. But he tried hard to fit in, even getting into the habit of removing his scales with a scouring pad to stop himself from having to transform back into his mer-form. Though he couldn't follow them outside of the gold sector in Haru, Jae-ha did his best to have fun with his friends when they were there. Until eventually, it was very rare that he ever was left alone and had become very popular among the other staff.
At the age of twelve, Jae-ha was told that his exemplary work had allowed him to become a part of the princess' entourage, he started off by running errands for all the princess' wants and needs and carrying out various chores as well. He was given his own room again, fitted with a large pool this time and a decent-sized living area. He was thankful for everything given to him and though he struggled to live alone again, he did not want to seem ungrateful to Khan family after all they had done for him.
He was even granted permission to take part in the formal classes with the children of higher backgrounds, lesser nobles and a few children of Great Houses as well. Though this time, he felt a very clear divide between him and them. He struggled much more to make friends in his new environment and he certainly wasn't helped as they approached their teenage years. Whilst the other children grew taller and broader, Jae-ha struggled to put on any weight and wasn't getting any taller. He soon gave up all sparring sessions with the others, being so easily overpowered it became embarrassing. Scarred skin and unflattering looks only served to further divide him from his classmates. As the years dragged on, it almost reached the point where he would struggle to leave his room to go and do his jobs.
It was by chance that he overheard the conversation between the young noble-born boys that he first heard of Aoi Mizushima- a merfolk apparently capable of seducing anything with eyes and a heart. He saved his earnings for months, until he submitted a request to have Mizushima mentor him.
Slowly he has learnt to embrace the fact that he is not a human, and that being a merman was nothing to be embarrassed about. Neglecting his natural form for years and years, he had yet to even develop an adult tail and tone his muscles. He started giving himself 3 or 4 days to himself after his tail grew back to dedicate to exercise, skincare and as of very recently, learning magic as well. Looking after himself and learning to become more confident in himself, brought back his more playful and social nature, As it stands now, Jae-ha is a well-liked member of the household staff and has befriended several young nobles too.
As Aliyah was crowned to be the next Empress, Jae-ha has tried hard to practise some self-control to maintain the Empress' image (semi-successfully). Although the pressure and responsibilities he has are far greater now, he is also proud and works all the harder now for the sake of the young Empress.
