风花雪月
incomparable and unchanging beauty; no matter the weather or season.
The spell of summer sunshine had awoken the countryside and had breathed life into every plant and creature it touched: The vibrant green of the crops coming into their prime, the magnificent blue skies rolling far out into the horizon and reflected in the rice paddies, a red butterfly fluttered past lazily and the golden sun nested between fluffy white clouds amidst its kingdom of colour.
And Yunfan sat astride his black horse. He was clad in his colourless robes, save for the occasional mud stain that coloured it.. His dark eyes were trained on the road for a sign of his target- a deserter. One with a big tongue and a very unfortunate idea of where clan loyalties lay.
He didn't quite remember the day the boy had come (and thinking about it, neither did he think he could remember his face now either) but he had been young, a street urchin who had been offered a second chance. He was not the only one to have been rescued from the gutters but he was certainly among the youngest to join their ranks. As soon as he had heard, Yunfan had put as much distance as possible between himself and the boy. He had wanted no part in looking after the boy or babysitting... but he knew that many had sacrificed and helped protect the young one as if he were as deserving of the love and care they might give one of their own children. He guessed for one so young, it would be easy to mistake the love of the clan as love for him as an individual.
He would find out soon how wrong he was.
It might have been a single merciful swing of a sword had he not fallen for the village chief and caused a lot of trouble for the clan with his big tongue. It was all the more of a shame as Yunfan could not help but think that the red sprayed over the trail would compliment the other colours in the landscape quite nicely.
Alas, it would be a long end for him.
Unaware of what awaited him, he heard the laughter of a young man approaching. He was talking so he assumed there was at least one other person with him. He frowned. He had no instructions on how to deal with anyone else who might be present...Damn it, he might as well take them all and let someone higher ranked than him decide their fate. He couldn't know if the boy was riding with an accomplice or an unfortunate he had chanced upon mere minutes ago. Either way, they would end up regretting their decision to talk to him in a few minutes.
He watched as they approached. To them, it was but a small hedgerow like any other that lined the path- but the shadows concealed Yunfan perfectly and across the road, high in the trees, several others lay in wait. He gave no signal yet though the voices drew nearer and nearer. Yunfan wanted to make sure that they were alone first and there were no unwanted eyes to stir up trouble when none was needed.
It would be so much more work and such a pain should he have to run down any witnesses of the incident. Yunfan detested anything tiresome and messy. He was in charge so he would be sure that this would run smoothly ad without complication so he could make it back to Jinyin in good time.
