looks
Yunfan has a fearsome reputation and the look to go with his image. Tall, clad in black, fierce eyes and sharp features. Little is known about him but people just need to take one look at him, and already they begin to imagine the stories of him when he was a ferocious fighter who would commit awful crimes wherever he went.
He holds himself with an arrogant pride. About a head or so above the common crowd, he sweeps through the cities without having to look down or make eye contact with anyone. Usually people have the sense to get out of his way but he will not show the slightest consideration for anyone who doesn't react fast enough.
For such a disreputable character, he does manage to keep a clean appearance. Waist-length silky black hair is kept in a high ponytail, his clothes (though a little tattered around the edges) are mostly clean and seem fairly expensive. Scarred or damaged tissue is covered by black cloth wraps braces. With the sole exception of a large scar running down his face.. Many see this as confirmation of how successful as a smuggler and take it as all the more reason to get out of his way.

charms
Yunfan has never added to the thousands of rumours surrounding him and has allowed others to make up whatever stories they wish about him. He doesn't care what most people think about him so long as they'll take the hint to stay away from him. In reality, Yunfan was neither a warrior nor has he ever even been in a fight. He was in fact just a poet, and not even a trained or outstanding one at that. This is not to say that he hasn't become a dangerous person since then. His knowledge of poisons and his manipulative side make him a force not to be taken lightly.
Most dangerous of all is his detachment to the world around him. It has been 68 years since he awoke as a drifter and he's slowly lost touch with the world around him- now, exclusively living for his own pleasure. He struggles to relate to others on an emotional level, having been so long since he felt passionately about anything. He just takes life by small pleasures by creating a mess for others around him and watching the chaos that ensues- he previously distinguished between upper and lower class people but even that distinction has faded now.
Not quite fitting the barbaric image that people want to have of Yunfan, he is a well-spoken and eloquent character nonetheless. Aside from some wild mood swings, he doesn't show any sign of the all-consuming madness that people expect drifters to have. And in his spare time, he can even enjoy some fairly normal pastimes from reading to writing (though he will refuse to show anyone or perform for anyone).

past
Yunfan started life as the son of a poet and painter from a rural village in the Yushan empire, before Hanami was founded. You can imagine they weren't a family rolling in vast wealth and riches but they were young and optimistic and so with their son, they moved to Jinyin to further their skills there. And for several years, life went on no differently to before- his parents both took on work and pursued their arts in their spare time. Yunfan also learnt a lot from his parents and the many artists that he grew up around.
Things then seemed to suddenly take off when Yunfan's father was accepted into the Jinyin Arts Academy. Yunfan would greet his father every day after he finished his classes and walk home with him. He understood that it wasn't easy for his father to attend the academy from such a humble background so he put part of his own wages towards supporting his father. Over time, Yunfan became very adept himself at writing and dreamed of joining his father at the academy once they had earned enough.
As his father became better known, he would be invited to perform at various events and often Yun would be asked to go with him.
His 17th birthday, both him and his father were asked to perform in the Capital and in the same day, Yun was told he was accepted into the academy. After years of hard work, it seemed Yun could finally reap what he had sown. However, that very night- on the way back from his performance- he had the misfortune of being in the path of a group of drunk officials who were leaving the same venue on horseback. As they charged at great speed, they hardly took notice of Yun and certainly didn't notice anything as he was knocked over, fell awkwardly and snapped his neck (one might have slowed down to see if his horse was okay). The next morning Yunfan was found and his body dragged away.
He woke up in a mass grave. It was not yet filled and he wasn't far from the top. But being surrounded by so much death, so confused and scared- he has never been able to forget that moment. He scrambled out and went to the nearest temple where he sought clothing, food and shelter. His belongings had all been taken and he was left with a only a few strips of cloth. He learned of what he had become- a 'drifter'- neither alive nor dead but forced to wander until they had completed their purpose.
He travelled back to Jinyin city, only to find his parents had gone- probably to move back to their hometown. He would have joined them and lived out his days on their farm. But he caught sight of the five men who had caused his death and seeing them so happy, so carefree in that instant caused him to completely lose it. They had ruined his life, all his hopes and dreams and hadn't even noticed, that's how unimportant his life... He didn't even remember buying the poison that evening.
He murdered each of them, leaving behind no traces except a poem in blood for each victim.
And there he was. He was a criminal now. Too ashamed to go back home. Ineligible to apply for any academy or an aprenticeship as a drifter. Just left to wander the earth until he could finally fade from it.
Belonging to the city of all knowledge, he sought advice. He was told to live his life as he would have done, that way he could find what he could never accomplish and end his suffering in Hanami. If Hikari had chosen him, then they suggested he pursue his passions.
Aside from the fact that all this information was a lot easier said than done when he could no longer live life as before, he tried nonetheless. He found a house (well, more of a pathetic excuse for one) on the very edge of the city for a ridiculous price (apparently there was no telling what damage a drfiter might do) and he found a job that paid cash in hand for smuggling goods in and out of the city.
The head of the organisation made life hard for Yun but he managed to bear it and slowly but steadily rose through the ranks until he became a trusted member. But he never forgot the years of struggles he had to go through and when the head took leave to see his girlfriend, Yun tipped off some people who weren't a big fan. Yun had been asked to look after the leader's sword until he came back to pick it up and he still carries that sword now.
He didn't seek control of the organisation but enjoyed the freedom he now had within the organisation as a senior member. He became an expert in moving around the city, slipping through the streets unnoticed and using his silver tongue to his advantage. As Jinyin became a more dangerous place, with many other criminals taking advantage of its remoteness yet central location to conduct shadowy business- Yunfan was charged with getting them out. whether it was driving them out of business, leading Jinyin guards to them, driving them crazy, he would come up with all sorts of methods.
