looks
Nian isn’t necessarily the most beautiful being out there, for sure. However, primarily harbouring a race of sublime beauty certainly has its perks, and so she certainly stands out a little more than the average citizen. True to her mermaid roots, Nian’s skin is smooth and soft, almost glowing in sun and water due to faint, almost unnoticeable translucent scales. Her facial features are generally quite soft and rounded, and paired with her clear glowing skin, allow her to appear quite innocent and childlike in nature. Her face is framed by thick, long, wavy black locks that reach mid-back at their straightest. Generally she keeps her hair flowing freely, however sometimes she may plait it or tie it into a loose updo to keep it out of the way, with only a few wispy bits loose to frame her face. She also sports a rather slim, light frame quite characteristic of her elven heritage, however rather than lanky she still sports a clearly feminine build and is surprisingly stronger than she looks. With such a petite build and childish features she is a very easy one to underestimate.
In her human form with her scales and tail shed, Nian looks almost entirely human, with the exception of her glowing skin and the quite noticeable leaf-shape structure of her ears, less prominant than true elves but still clearly evident when not covered by her hair. She even stands at a small, human height of 1.6 metres despite her elven blood, and keeps her legs either clear of scales, or well covered. Unlike many merfolk, on land Nian has surprising agility and grace, however this is attribute to how much of her life she has lived on land, giving her plenty of time to practice. Her hybridised race allows for nearer to two weeks without a tail, and seven to nine days to live freely without thought of scales returning to her legs. Generally near the end of these two weeks Nian will readily return to the water for a short time, keeping her skin hydrated and bright, however should she wish for longer on land she can shed her scales for longer than other merfolk without fear of her skin drying out due to being a hybrid.
In her merfolk form, Nian looks much the same, with the exception of a fish-like tail extending from her waste down to replace the legs of her human form. This tail is surprisingly muscular, allowing her to propel herself through the water with grace and ease, as well as adding an extra 30 centimetres to her human height to make a length of 1.9 metres. Her tail has long, flowing fins that carry beautifully with the water, adding beauty to the grace of her movements. Her scales are a dark blue, almost black in color, yet in certain lights there are many hints of blue and green shimmering throughout. Her fins are slightly more translucent than her main scales, and are a lighter blueish green, as well as rimmed with the slightest hint of gold. It is hard to tell where Nian flourishes best, however the ethereal beauty and grace of a mermaid certainly suits her.

charms
Nian’s mother would once say that she is a beautiful soul far too good for this world, and this viewpoint of her daughter won’t have changed if she saw her now. Nian isn’t necessarily the smartest, or the bravest, or the most confident...but she has a strong will, and so much passion. Her biggest attribute is that without fail, she hopes, and she believes. She sees the good and the light in everything and everyone, she never gives up on someone, for in her mind everyone deserves love and compassion, everyone deserves someone trying to help and understand them. She doesn’t believe anyone is truly evil, and perhaps that is naivety, but in her belief she sees those that do bad things as those that don’t know any better, or that are striking out from their own pain. There’s always a reason, there has to be. Or perhaps that’s just how she helps herself sleep at night because she’s known bad people but believing in the good only she can seem to see keeps her sane and stops her from giving up.
After all, fear may be powerful, but hope is just as strong, and this hope is something she once came to rely on and now she never wants to let it go.
Generally, she will maintain her friendly, happy outlook on life. If an insult hurts her, she will brush it off and not let it show. She will shoulder most anything, and willingly take other people’s burdens. She will talk to anyone, be kind to everyone, and is always ready to lend a listening ear or a shoulder to lean on even to a stranger. Perhaps this makes her foolish, but she was taught to be kind and such has never harmed her, not yet. Perhaps she takes on too many problems from other people, listens too much without ever speaking her own mind, but she has learnt to put everyone else before herself and bottle up all her emotions. She would never cry in company, not if she could help it, for she feels she’s supposed to be the rock. The one everyone else can lean on and get support from, to be with them while they cry, and ever brave and strong enough to shoulder it and cope perfectly with her own emotions. But she can’t cope as well as it may seem, she’s just very convincing. She’s so convincing in saying that everything is perfect and she is fine, that throughout any day she can just as easily convince herself. And so, her smiles are not fake, and her enjoyment of the simple pleasures is true.
Fear, however, is something she can’t handle so well. Fear, and grief. She’s known both so little in her life that she can’t block them out, they shine on her face plain as day and eat away at her without mercy. She can comfort any other who is afraid or grieving, but her own...she doens’t know what to do with it. If she found herself afraid of someone, undoubtedly she would back down and submit. If she was trying to protect someone she loved from a threat, perhaps she’d stay a little stronger, test her will and stand strong for them. Maybe she’d be pushed by a very rare anger that keeps her standing. Yet ultimately, the chance of her submitting and letting the other win still runs high. She’s passive by nature. She hates fighting and confrontation, she’d rather duck her head and shy away. When faced with a true danger she wouldn’t know any better than to simply let it win, for she knows she isn’t brave and she isn’t strong. She’s just good. And sometimes good isn’t enough.

past
Nian was born in Sumi, home of fishing and mermaids galore, to a mermaid mother and an elven father. Their relationship was never really one of love, but for a time their daughter bound them, settling somewhere between their species and slightly in each of their hearts. For much of her earlier life, Nian lived mostly with her father, but was allowed to visit her mother often, taking to the seas and enjoying the other side of life. However, when her mother disappeared out of the blue, presumably dead, this part of her life abruptly ended.
With her mother gone her father no longer saw use in her going out to sea, despite her still primarily being a mermaid. All admittance of her being a mermaid seemed removed, and her father seemed disgusted by the thought when she had to spend a brief amount of time in her true form on the odd occaision. The length of time she’d stay out of the water grew longer and longer, to the point of which she wouldn’t go for months and would rid herself of any scales by her father’s insistence. She was an elf, that was all she was allowed to be. And atop of it all, her father took to drinking and disappearing for long amounts of time, expecting food prepared and cleaning done from his daughter. She looked after him like he was the child. However, she still stayed positive, she still made excuses for him in her head and to the faces of those concerned. For he was her father, and she convinced herself she still loved him.
Eventually, however, she’d had enough. Her uncle all but insisted she leave with him, and with the opportunity to see the world, work, and get away from it all, she took this chance. Her uncle was a travelling trader, mostly dealing in fish and other water related things, but also in exotic creatures sold to entertainers or nobles as show animals and pets. The rarity of these animals varied, but one thing stayed the same. Nian never knew where he got them from, only that he’d leave her with her cousins for a while, and return again later with new stock and new animals.
