looks
Based on first impressions, it's no surprise that Ahanu is a revered warrior and many wonder if there was ever another calling in life for him. If he's considered tall among the centaurs at 2.4 metres, you can be sure that he'll dwarf just about all of his enemies. He has a rough look to him with his uneven stubble, well-worn clothes and a stained, long-haired, scruffy coat in dire need of a good grooming. On top of that, he carries all the telltale signs of a seasoned warrior with a broad, muscular frame from years of physical training, callous hands, a decent share of faded scars and tan lines outlining where his armour is usually fitted. For most people, this alone is often enough for them to get out of his way when he's passing by and there's no question that seeing him charging towards you on the battlefield is enough to terrify many of Hanami's bravest fighters.
But getting over his size, he seems- not gentle, but warm. His laugh lines seemingly permanently etched onto his face, he has smiling warm chestnut eyes, and you can't miss the flash of white teeth when he gives his award-winning smile. He carries himself casually, lacking the proud air that many warriors have about them. He moves more cautiously than most, afraid that he'll break something or hurt someone if he's too careless.
Over the past decades, Ahanu has been invited and expected to attend more and more social events as a high-ranking member of the imperial army. He has therefore taken it upon himself to look after his appearance a little more. This means that he'll think twice before putting on the stained white shirt to events (though if the washing hasn't been done for a while, he doesn't have much of a choice) and have a quick wash with soap before heading out of the house. He has also started favouring a neat, close-cropped hairstyle over the dreadlocks he previously had. As far as his coat goes, he finds it too much of a hassle to get his scraggly jet black coat clipped and has grown rather fond of his feathered legs so hasn't bothered to do anything about it, though it could really do with more care than it currently receives.

charms
Ahanu is one of those people who separates his job from his personal life without any difficulties. So, depending on what context you meet him in, you could meet two very different people:
Captain Naiman is captain of the rangers division at Hanamisu. He is a strict and fierce man, both feared and respected by his own men. He doesn't tolerate any form of messing around and demands absolute respect of the chain of command- which in most cases, has him at the top. He's made a name for himself as a talented and skilled warrior, leading many successful campaigns and battles over his career. He tends not to overthink things when it comes to strategy, he goas with his instinct as a fighter and is much less of a tactician. He is very good at following orders and carrying out his duties but often struggles making judgements himself.
On the other hand, Ahanu is also everybody's favourite drinking buddy. He's easygoing and filled with that drunken sort of wisdom, the kind that doesn't come into use unless you're consoling lonely souls at at the bar. He thinks he's funnier than he actually is but the relaxed he creates is usually warm and bright enough to have people laughing anyway. And besides his laugh, hearty and loud as it is, is highly contagious. Ahanu is such a relaxed person that he can easily laugh off just about anything in this state. He doesn't' want a repeat of his teenage years, where he would pick fights with anyone who so much as looked at him the wrong way. As well as finding it tiring, it was expensive to pay for damages caused by a giant centaur.
As you can imagine, Ahanu has plenty of acquaintances but there are few people he would consider close friends. He would regard his squad as the most important thing to him. But even with them, he couldn't place anyone above the law and he would call them out if it was brought to it. He has a strong sense of duty and will carry it out, even at the cost of a few hurt feelings.

past
Ahanu was born as the second child to Nahuel-sahma and Iara-sahma, the two leaders of what was once the largest centaur tribe in Ulme. He was born at the very start of Kagiso's conquest and whether it was fighting off her armies or other unfriendly tribes, Ahanu was constantly surrounded by conflict as he was growing up. Though the only conflict that he took any note of was the constant war between himself and his elder sister, Tamaya. Whilst Ahanu was adventurous, fun and enjoyed spending his time exploring, annoying the tribe's elders and play-fighting- Tamaya was already on route for becoming proficient at astral magic at a young age, wasted her time sucking up to elders to get treats and she took great pleasure telling on Ahanu. And even when the tribes had been forced to seek shelter at Irme as Kagiso's armies focussed all their strength on subduing Ulme, Ahanus was still mainly concerned that he had to spend so much time with his sister in such a cramped area,
After Ulme eventually surrendered, the Naiman tribe dispersed and Nahuel and Iara settled in the realm's new capital under House Sayan. As tribe leaders, they were not given any titles or land but they remained an influential family to many of the centaurs who had followed them to Hwalla. The family made their fortune through trade and soon after settling, they bought several vineyards on the mountainside. Ahanu worked there, doing a lot of the heavy lifting and physical tasks. It wasn't exciting work but the company of his co-workers was enough so that he was satisfied enough with his life as it was.
Mikasi was born several years later and as his parents were often called away on business, both Tamaya and Ahanu were expected to help with their little brother. Ahanu did enjoy looking after Mikasi and spoiled him a fair bit, given the fierce competition with his sister to become the favourite older sibling (he still remains disappointed that Mikasi was so easily won over by Tamaya's silly magic tricks). Mikasi was soon followed by Huyana and Muna, though they had much better taste than Mikasi (both of them unconditionally picking Ahanu as their coolest older sibling), the responsibility of having to look after all his younger siblings grew to the point that Ahanu got tired of staying in Hwalla. And so, when he was 16, he packed his bags and set off to explore Hanami.
Over the next few years, there was a lot of drinking and gambling across the realms of Hanami. Ahanu had traveled all over and had a definite idea on the places he enjoyed and those he did not... The treetop cities of Chanda were one of his least favourite after a close call when a drunken Ahanu had fallen out of one of the tree houses. He made most of his money from fighter pits, helping out with odd jobs in various places and so on. However as he reached his twenties, he started running into problem after problem- with money, stability, health and with the authorities. He decided that it was time he started looking for a proper job but his years of messing around meant that he had neglected studies in the common tongue and there were few people hiring anyone with the basic education provided by Hanami authorities.
He started school at 23, staying over with friends whilst he was in education. He was put into a class with an embarrassing number of children and elderly citizens but studied hard to complete his education as soon as he could manage. After a year of classes, he was scouted by one of Hanami's officials to sign up for the imperial army. Though it was no easy task to get in, forcing Ahanu to pull himself together and start training seriously for the position. He was accepted eventually and started his basic training alongside his classes. It took him a long time to complete his training, almost being kicked out several times for discipline issues and failing many of his theory exams.
Even as a soldier, he still lacked in many areas and he made little effort to improve or correct himself. As far as he was aware, his strength and power was invaluable to the army and thus no matter how angry they got at him, they wouldn't let him go anyway. It was an attitude that changed very abruptly after his 4th battle. He was too arrogant and too bold and completely underestimated the enemy. He found himself at the mercy of a human warrior who had completely outmaneuvered him. One of his comrades, who had never spoken, stepped in to help him. Ahanu managed to escaped but his rescuer was not as lucky.
After the battle, he found out more about the soldier who had given her life for him. She was the eldest of thirteen from a family in Nirun and after she joined Hanamisu, she had found her potential, selected as one of the most promising soldiers with a bright future ahead of her. Ahanu himself went to deliver the news to her family. The guilt and shame of taking all that away from the family led him to make a vow through the goddess Kami that he would take responsibility for the family, and to this day he still sets aside part of his earnings to send up to Nirun.
He spent the next 30 years working hard so he would never have to have someone take the penalty for his mistakes before he had finally made his way up the ranks to become a captain. He started worship of Kami during this time as well. As well as being in charge of his own squadron, mainly operating in Rohaya and Western regions of Ulme, he has also worked training new recruits at Hanamisu.
Of course, there were friends he had to say goodbye to and there were mistakes he made throughout his career, but none of them had left the same impression as that first incident 30 years ago. That was until, an incident occurred when he was chasing down a group of slave traders in Ulme and whilst trying to surround the enemy, Ahanu had unknowingly involved a small nomadic tribe in the conflict. He realised his mistake too late and though he tried to move the fight, many innocents had already died as a result of the conflict. The battle was quickly won and so the survivors of the tribe were brought to Irme to be treated. Ahanu made sure that their board and lodging was covered by the Empire. Among the survivors, he grew particularly protective over a young harpy who reminded him of his younger sisters Huyana and Muna. Although he couldn't take her with him, he promised to recommend her to the heads of Hanamisu should she ever wish to find a family there. She signed up the next year and completing her training in three years, she was then placed in Ahanu's squadron. Ahanu took good care of her and the two moved into a house together in Silverhill. They excelled as a team with his newest recruit quickly rising among the ranks to become Ahanu's second-in-command after several years together.
Up until now, Ahanu has been making money, living comfortably and has calmed down considerably since his early days- even to the point that he and Tamaya can get on fairly well now (despite a fair bit of teasing). With such a high-standing rank in Hanamisu, he is supposed to be invited to many occasions and events... but often people will "forget" to send an invite if there"s going to be lots of alcohol. He remains loyal to Hanami and its rulers, despite being fully aware of the growing tensions between the realms.
