The Empire of Hanami was one founded on the principal of equality and it's something that shows through the inheritance and marriage laws of the empire. MARRIAGE Marriage in Hanami is overseen by the temple of Ai, all of whom are sworn to recognise love regardless of gender or race. The details of marriage ceremonies will vary from province to province, however they must all follow the same basic structure:
- The engaged couple will present themselves before a temple of Ai and announce their engagement.
- The couple will return for the next 7 days for worship and give offerings at the temple.
- A priest or priestess will choose to approve or reject* the marriage. If approved, they will arrange a wedding date for the couple.
- After the ceremony, the couple will register their marriage with the priest and it will be sent to the magistrate's records.
*marriage rejection :: a priest or priestess may choose to reject a match based on their attendance over the 7 days and should they have any concerns of safety for either partner.
D I V O R C E
Divorce is frowned upon and very uncommon but it is legal should both partners agree to the decision before a priest or priestess of Ai, 7 days of worship as a couple is required before the divorce is recognised and registered
C O N C U B I N E S
Concubines have been an exclusive luxury for the higher class for many years. A magistrate can have up to 3 concubines, a governor or minister may have up to 5 and the emperor may have as many as he or she wishes. You may also be granted the right to have up to 2 concubines by a magistrate in return for an exceptional service to the county (or more commonly for a hefty bribe).
To obtain a concubine, you do not need go through a temple of Ai, a simple signed contract between both parties is all that is needed. Anyone, regardless of gender, can have concubines and similarly concubines can be of any gender themselves. INHERITANCE As it is not an uncommon occurrence for lgbtq marriages to take place, naturally inheritance does not automatically fall to the eldest biological son (or even child for that matter) of both parents. Adopted children or children born from surrogate parents can be officially recognised. If they are recognised, they become official family members and must be treated equally to any biological children. Unless stated otherwise, the eldest child inherits the estate.
If there is no named heir and there is no direct descendant apparent, inheritance passes to the next closest relative.
C H I L D R E N O F C O N C U B I N E S
As concubines are not married at the temple of Ai, children of concubines are not recognised heirs so by default, they inherit nothing. If there are no heirs, inheritance moves to a concubine's child. If there are multiple children, the eldest child of the highest ranked concubine will inherit.
U L M E & U L T I M O G E N I T U R E
The province of Ulme is unique in that inheritance of the estate will usually fall to youngest. As the population has been nomadic/semi-nomadic for centuries now, the role of the eldest is to lead the tribe or clan whilst the youngest was to keep the household for their return. | [attr="class","goodness"] MARRIAGE DIVORCE INHERITANCE |

Whether or not you believe in the higher powers, religion plays an important part in daily life within Hanami. HANAMI EMPIRE One of Kagiso's first decrees was to unite worship throughout the Empire. The religious heads and governors gathered and agreed on the current pantheon of seven deities [ read more here ].
Not only that but religious festivals, the duties of temples and recognition of all seven deities was enforced throughout. Priests and priestesses were now also required to train at the Harumi Temple, the central temple at the heart of the Empire, to be officially recognised.
The duties of temples A temple has several duties aside from simply being a place of worship and the center of religion in their respective communities, they are:
- Provision of basic education. The temple provide a free one year education course in which the Mirian language (official language) is taught as well as information about the empire.
- Provision of basic healthcare. The temple will provide basic care and aid to the best of its abilities to those who are in need.
- Provision of basic counselling. The temple provides private counselling and advice without passing judgement (unless the law has been violated).
Specific temples will also offer specific services depending on which deity/deities it worships. - Sei :: Midwifery and will often house adoption homes
- Shi :: Funeral services
- Michi :: Housing to travellers and those in need
- Ai :: Marriage and divorce services
- Kami :: Care for families that fallen soldiers have left behind
- Sho :: Overseeing of justice trials
HUMANs and religion Humans have always been at the heart of religion due to their spiritual magic. They are the only beings who are able to communicate and interact with ghosts (a ghost is a drifter who has lost their physical form). Because of this connection, many of the most important roles in the temples are occupied by humans.

[attr="class","life"] ❝ life is full of little lies and most of them are mine. there are things even my mind can't deny. [attr="class","les"]EDUCATION & ACADEMIES
Through the education systems and programs put in place by Empress Kagiso and further developed and expanded by Emperor Yesun, Hanami has reached an impressive level of education for the population as a whole. With very few who are unable to speak, write or read in the common tongue.
FREE EDUCATION The free education is provided by all temples in Hanami. The education program they offer lasts one year and teaches Mirian (common tongue), history of Hanami and information on the empire as a whole.
Thus there are very few who remain ignorant of the Empire they live in and there is rarely any communication barrier between the different provinces. In fact being completely clueless (if you're not exceedingly old) is a telltale sign of being a barbarian from the outlands.
Some temples offer advanced courses and are home to graduates of Hanami's academies but they are usually only found in the biggest and most prestigious temples.
PUBLIC SCHOOLS It is relatively uncommon to find a family who can afford to send their children to school (though education is paid for- meals, uniforms, books and commuting is not covered). Many commoners have simply received temple education and then start apprenticeships.
However there are public schools found in the capitals of each region where parents can send their children. These schools accommodate for children from age 6 through to 16 (it is very common for children to spend a maximum of 3-5 years at school before dropping out).
For the families who can afford it, they will hire private tutors instead of sending their children to public schools,
IMPERIAL ACADEMIES There are 7 imperial academies in Hanami. To graduate from an academy shows not only a great intellect but great dedication to studying. A graduate of any academy must prove to be a great thinker across all fields (though each academy does specialize in certain fields).
There is no set period of study, only an annual exam that needs to be passed in order to graduate. The exam lasts 2 weeks and there is only a 10% pass rate. The shortest time it has ever taken anyone to pass is 5 years at an academy but usually takes about 10 years or longer.
Once a graduate, you can choose to pursue studies as a member of the academy or leave the academy for other opportunities. Positions such as Imperial Ministers and Magistrates are only given to academy graduates (no matter how much money or power they wield otherwise). Hence many magistrates will try and wed heirs who have not graduated to fresh graduates.
Imperial Academy of Haru :: politics and history Imperial Academy of Jinyin :: arts and language Imperial Academy of Hachisu :: business and trade Imperial Academy of Farukas :: smithery and engineering Imperial Academy of Silla :: natural sciences and medicine Imperial Academy of Nagawa (Kagiso Academy) :: philosophy and law Imperial Academy of Amba:: religion and magic
