welcome to hanami
You are standing within the greatest empire known to mortals.
Unlike any other empire or realm before it, Hanami has successfully brought together the strengths and minds of all known races. Though there was cause for hope and celebration at its foundation, Hanami is still only a young empire and she is fragile. Unpopularity with the other influential families
has weakened the imperial rule. It now falls to our youngest Empress yet to tend to the grievances and wishes of those that surround her in order to bring back the empire to its former state.
Whether it crumbles or prevails is up to you. Choose wisely because the fate of Hanami really is in your hands.

HANAMI EMPIRE: AN OVERVIEW The empire of Hanami, the largest known in recorded history, covers over 600 million hectares from the western isles of Sumi and the frozen northern mountains in Nirun to the great eastern plains of Ulme and the rolling dunes of Tuya. From its foundation, the empire has sought to unify its citizens and it has already succeeded in creating a common language, currency and religion- granting all citizens access to a world without borders. Furthermore, with strict policies against any kind of discrimination, most citizens have been able to travel far and wide without many worries of where they may end up. PROVINCE OVERVIEW Province | Adjectival/Demonym | Capital | Ruling family | Important Locations | Yushan | Yusha | Haru | Khan family | Imperial palace, Harumi temple, Rohaya, Silverhill | Sumi | Sumuri | Hachisu | Oshima family | Ancient Hachisu home, Port of Ryo, Temple of Hanyu, the House of Comfort | Nirun | Niruni | Farukas | Dain family | Farukas furnaces, Huin, Kitayuki Springs, The Rift. | Ulme | Ulmari | Hwalla | Sayan family | Silla Academy, Fortress of Irme, Shrine to Mino, The Great Plains | Tuya | Tuyari | Tissam | Kitami family | Tissami Court of Justice, Kagiso Academy, Kin City, Nagawa Lake | Chanda | Chandali | Samil | Masali family | House of Sei, Holika tree, Nima island, Amba |
GOVERNMENT Imperial familyThe empress or emperor's power is virtually absolute throughout Hanami. They have control as commander-in-chief of all armed and military forces, the sole appointer of leading officials (including ministers, commanders, governors and magistrates), exclusive right to modify the law (though laws are scrutinized by the court of justice in Tissam), supreme judge and head of the religion in Hanami as the sacred link between Heaven and Earth. - Three Excellencies: Imperial Counsellor, Grand Commandant and the Chancellor
- Nine Ministers: Minister of Ceremonies, Minister of the Household, Minister Coachman, Minister of Justice, Minister Herald, Minister of the Imperial Clan, Minister of Finance and Minister Steward.
Governing familiesFor each of the 7 provinces, there is a governor or governess- the imperially approved head of a governing family. They are responsible for the officials within the region as well as command of the military forces within the area. They are required to submit reports on all local officials based on their competence, honesty, obedience to the imperial court, adherence to the law, their treatment of convicts, and any signs of extortion, nepotism, or factionalism. Magistrates
Within the provinces, there are various counties. Each one is commanded by a magistrate. A magistrate is charged with maintaining law and order, storing grain in case of famine, registering the populace for taxation, mobilizing conscripted commoners for corvée labor projects, supervising public works, renovating schools, and performing rituals. They were also given the duty to act as judge for all lawsuits brought to the county court. CURRENCY Hanami uses dan as a currency. In circulation there are 10, 20, 50 and 100 yuan coins and 1000, 2000, 5000 and 10 000 yuan paper notes. Almost used more as a symbol of wealth and status are the yu dan coins, worth 150 000 yuan. They are special coins made of silver and jade and are given by the emperor to the most important and influential of families. Within Ulme and some more remote regions, bartering is still a common method of trade but otherwise, the dan currency is the only officially recognized currency throughout Hanami. LANGUAGES
Mirian is the common language within Hanami. Under Kagiso's rule, each county was to provide and encourage a basic free education to its people- teaching Mirian, religion and more about Hanami culture and identity. Through this program (largely developed and improved by Emperor Yesun), Mirian has become a language not only spoken but also read and written by all citizens. Being illiterate is very uncommon and is usually seen as a telltale sign of an immigrant from one of 'uncivilised' parts of the world. Writing SystemsIt has two writing systems: Hanzi and Hangul. Hanzi uses over 20 000 characters, each representing a word or family of words- study of Hanzi takes many years and remains an alphabet used only by the most educated citizens in Hanami. Hangul on the other hand uses a phonetic alphabet and taught and used by the vast majority of citizens. Dialects & Ancient TonguesThere are 6 distinct dialects: yu-mirian , su-mirian , ni-mirian, ul-mirian, tu-mirian and cha-mirian. Yu-Mirian is the Yusha dialect and is considered the 'correct' pronunciation, it is also the dialect taught in all government schools. There are very few ancient tongues in use nowadays with citizens only now using traditional languages for naming children. Some of the most important ancient tongues are: Elvish (used by elves and still used frequently in elvish communities as they are much older), Hadda (Spoken by harpies and recognised by bird-like sounds. Still used for battle cries and traditional performances), Uruk (Used mainly centaurs & satyrs and still used commonly in vocabulary for hunting), Tuyari (Used by the human tribes of Tuya and still used in vocabulary in Hanami courts), Ainu (The language of Shima empire, now the central island of Sumi province). YUSHAN
THE PROVINCE
Yushan has always been a province that has been exceedingly influential role in the world. Located in one of the most fertile regions and with very developed agricultural practices, Yusha has offered its citizens security and established important ties to neighbouring provinces through trade. It is home to some of the biggest, wealthiest and most developed cities in existence. It's capital, Haru, sits on an artificial mound with the river splitting around it, rendering it with very good defences should any army try and stage a siege. The lotus throne and seat of the Imperial family is located here. IMPERIAL FAMILY
From humble origins, the Khan family have risen to the absolute rulers of the world's largest empire. Khan Kagiso has become one of the most celebrated and beloved figures in the history of the world. Although the Khan family has lost some popularity after the rule of Emperor Yesun, it is down to Khan Alia if they will regain the trust of the other families again. Head of family | Khan Aliyah | Current Heir | Khan Malia | Succession | Eldest child inherits all. If none apparent, inheritance passes onto eldest child born from concubines. | Military strength | The Yushan Imperial army consists of some of the most disciplined and advanced fighters. What they lack in strength, technology and force- they make up for in highly advanced strategies and tactics.
| Produce | Cereals, livestock, meat, medicines, machinery and transportation | Wealth | Vast. As a major producer and exporter of crops and technology and as the capital province of the empire, Yushan is the richest of the provinces and its citizens enjoy the highest quality of life. |
HISTORY
- Once an important tribe in northern Tuyari region, the Khan tribe lost their name and status as they were taken by slaves.
- 78 years after their enslavement, they successfully revolted and took over a large part of northern Tuya from their former rulers.
- Khan Nahar became the first head of family and married one of the daughters of the Kitami tribe.
- The youngest of the children born to Nahar, Kagiso was betrothed to the heir of the neighbouring realm (Southern Yushan)
- Khan Kagiso becomes a formidable military leader and even after her marriage, she keeps her own name. Her desire to bring forth a peaceful world and never have her family subdued again fuels her to plan for conquest of the empire.
- She finishes the conquest of Hanami 7 years later, becoming the first empress of Hanami.

SUMI
THE PROVINCE
Sumi is a vast expanse of islands, numbered at 103, found to the West of Yushan. It is a place that fisherman, sailors and merchants have called home for many years. Before Hanami was founded, many who were seeking to escape the wars that plagued the mainland fled to the Sumuri isles where they were able to start anew. The Sumuri people live off the union between the sea and the land. Most of it's cities are found on the reefside and extend deep into the ocean. The majority of the merfolk population now live in such cities, following the mass exodus from the cities in the Saran sea with the increase in trade. OSHIMA FAMILY
There are two branches of the Oshima family: Oshima of Ryo and Oshima of Hanyu. Both houses put forth an heir to rule alongside each other: The Oshima of Ryo overseeing the underwater counties and the Oshima of Hanyu overseeing the terrestrial counties. Both families are incredibly popular and command absolute loyalty of their people. Head of family | Oshima Izumi of Ryo Oshima Si-Young of Hanyu | Current heir | Oshima Akira of Ryo Oshima Soo-Jin of Hanyu | Succession | The eldest children of both branches inherit and govern together. If there is no heir apparent for one branch, succession passes to the other branch. | Military strength | Sumi have the strongest fleets in Hanami. As well as this, a merfolk army allows them to counter many naval attacks. | Produce | Fish, Ships, Rice, Silk, Rice Wine, Tea | Wealth | Vast. It houses the largest trading hubs in Hanami and charges high taxes to pass through the Saran sea. |
HISTORY
- Sumuri was a very divided region and very difficult for Kagiso's army to even touch.
- The Oshima family, rulers of the Shima empire (former empire located in central region of Sumi), offered an alliance with the Khan family. They would help conquer Sumi in return for position of power and semi-autonomy in Sumi.
- During the conquest of the landlocked regions of Hanami, the sons of the former Empress Oshima Suiko decided that they would split their mother's land between them. Oshima Ryo, who had married into an important mermaid family would govern the marine counties and his brother Oshima Hanyu, who had fallen in love with an elf would govern the terrestrial counties.
- Sumi was a very divided realm, through their immense popularity, Oshima family managed to unite the people under a single 'Sumuri' identity.

NIRUN
THE PROVINCE
Nirun is not a province you can wander into haphazardly. It is a perilous land, infamous for its bitter winters, dangerous icy landscapes and frequent raids from barbarians of the Far North. Although from this, an equally hardy and tough people have emerged, living in their formidable cities carved into the hearts of the mountains. There is almost nobody in Nirun who cannot wield multiple weapons, let alone a single one. Coupled with vast mines crawling with precious metals and stones- the skill of the Niruni in a forge is unparalleled. Many travellers also seek to enjoy the warmth of the Niruni people, the mountain hot springs and winter sports. DAIN FAMILY
The Dain family is an ancient and fierce one made up of the finest warriors of Hanami. In such a battle-hardened province, they keep to many traditions that seem strange to foreigners (such as their inheritance laws). Head of family | Dain Namiah | Current Heir | Dain Usun | Succession | Uses an adoption system: The most promising warrior selected by the head will be adopted as the heir and groomed to be the next ruler. The governing family may be challenged at any time through a fair trial by combat. | Military strength | Produces some of the finest weaponry and armour, making for an unparalleled heavy infantry. Almost all citizens are trained to fight, giving them a strong reserve force as well. | Produce | Metal ores and ingots, jewellery and precious stones, weapons, armour, furs. | Wealth | The people themselves have few luxuries to call their own. What wealth they make from selling goods, is often put towards the community and shared. |
HISTORY
- After the conquest of Hanami, a governing family was to be selected by the Empress Kagiso.
- However, as the governor or governess of Nirun was responsible for defence against the barbarians in the Far North and a great deal of dangers- to ensure that they were always well-protected, Nirun created an inheritance system using adoption instead of bloodlines.
- This adoption system meant that the most promising warriors were also entitled to education and grooming to be good political leaders as well as strong fighters.

ULME
THE PROVINCE
Ulme is depicted as a place of excitement and adventure; after all, all the greatest hunters and rangers have all received their training on its great plains. The surrounding mountainous region boast Hanami's greatest vineyards. Though It is too often viewed as a 'backwards' realm as much of the population still enjoys a nomadic life as hunters and herders. In reality, the understanding and connection that the Ulmari people have with nature and the world around them goes far beyond the knowledge of others. And as well as great hunters, Ulme boasts an impressive line of scientists. SAYAN FAMILY
The Sayan family were once one of the most feared tribes in all of Hanami, tales of their barbaric behaviour and savage ways spread far and wide and used to scare little children into obedience. But they were instated as the governing family of Ulme by the Empress Khan and have forged a new image for themselves as peaceful governors. Head of family | Sayan Elu | Current Heir | Sayan Elan | Succession | Follows laws of ultimogeniture, in which the youngest inherits the family hearth. They are less organised than many other armies. They are experts in long-range weaponry. | Produce | Livestock, wine, furs, leather, weaponry (especially long range), stone | Wealth | Minimal. - The Sayan tribe made their fortune from pillaging any settlements they came across.
- During Kagiso's conquest, much of the Western lands in Ulme fell to the imperial army due to dispersion of Ulmari tribes.
- The Sayan tribe, under their greatest leader Sayan Taichu, rallied the remaining free tribes and fought their last stand against Kagiso at the fort of Irme.
- Although they lost, for their inspiring influence, the Sayan tribe were instated as the governing family and the Sayan heir married to Khan Kagiso's younger sister as a symbol of their allegiance.

TUYA
THE PROVINCE
Tuya is a rich and powerful realm. In the Northern counties, Tuya's greatest cities rise up from the many acres of surrounding sand and desert. Beautifully and intelligently designed, they make the ideal destination for wealthy travelers. They are also home to some of the greatest schools and academies in Hanami and many of the empire's greatest minds have gathered here. The provincial capital Tissam has the supreme court of justice at its heart. However as beautiful and reputable as the northern counties are, they are countered with scorching wastelands below. Where temperatures reach their peak, oasis and cities are few and far between and the few that are present are often overrun by outlaws. With the largest border to the south of Tuya, to counteract the large wave of immigrants who smuggle themselves into Hanami from the Outlands, it is the only province in which slavery is legal. Though it is tightly regulated and strictly forbids the trade of any Hanami citizens. KITAMI FAMILY
The Kitami family have always been well-loved by the Tuyari people through their inclusive policies and provincial elections and voting systems. They place huge importance on their education and justice system, both ranked highest in all of Hanami. And even among the other provinces, the Kitami are very popular. Head of family | Kitami Zuri | Current Heir | Kitami Uzoma | Succession | Eldest child inherits. Bastard children can be legitimised in the absence of a true heir. | Military strength | Light infantry. Tuya has an excellent school of specialised fighters and assassins though they lack a large well-developed military armed forces. | Produce | Fuels, oils, gems and precious stones, luxury goods, transport | Wealth | Vast. Although Tuya imports many products such as water and food to its major cities, it produces many refined luxury goods and makes vast quantities of money through their exports. |
HISTORY
- The Kitami tribe come from an ancient tribe and were a tribe of peace long before the unification of Hanami.
- They had many settlements throughout the North of Tuya, many of whom eventually went on to form the Kitami-descended tribes (this included the Khan tribe)
- Living in a harsh environment, it was the goal of the Kitami tribe and their allies to share information, discoveries and govern intelligently so that they may never fall.
- The tribe were strong supporters of Kagiso's conquest and allied themselves with Kagiso at the very start of her conquest.
- They were instated as the governing family of Tuya and given many important titles and jobs within the palace and Yushan province.

CHANDA
THE PROVINCE
The most remote of all the provinces, Chanda is shrouded in tropical rainforest from head to toe. It is seen as an exotic province to many, home to a whole host of wildlife that is unseen anywhere else. And indeed travelling there, many have described it as an assault to the senses- from the vibrant colours and the exotic and strong perfumes everywhere you turn, to the dishes that have burned the palette of many a traveler and the warm humid climate that clings to you. But there is much beauty to be discovered here and the Chandali people take great pride in it. The traditional cities are even built into their surroundings so they do not destroy the unique beauty of their home- most famous and spectacular are the ancient treetop cities built by the harpies. Chanda is a spiritual centre as well. People will often go to the holy city and provincial capital, Samil, to offer prayers, seek guidance or even to see the magnificent religious festivals celebrated there. MASALI FAMILY
Chanda was another region for which there was much debate as to which family should be instated as governors. Although there were many arguments made by the important families, Empress Kagiso offered the title to a family of priestesses who had remained neutral and patient throughout all discussions. The Masali family are very traditional and still lead the priestesses and worship in the House of Sei. Head of family | Masali Jaya | Current Heir | Masali Kaira | Succession | Eldest child inherits. As it is traditional for two females to marry and rule the province, the children of either parent has equal claim to the throne. | Military strength | Although the harpy warriors make for frightening enemies, Chanda lacks an organised and developed military. Their strength in battle lies in their homeland, their ability to blend into it and confuse their opponent. | Produce | Textiles, dye, diamonds, jewellery spices, fruit | Wealth | Average. Like the Ulmari, many of the Chandali people still enjoy a fairly simple lifestyle. However, Chandali have several giant businesses that have made a huge profit from trade. |
HISTORY
- Chanda has never participated in the wars that affected the world. Chanda was divided into very small, isolated tribes and settlements that would often fight among themselves but had never banded together to form an organized military.
- As such, with the help of informants and guides, it was easy for the Empress to take possession of Chanda during her conquest.
- However with such a divided realm, the real difficulties came when it was time to decide on a governing family for the region. There were so many feuds that many of the tribe representatives refused to obey orders from any others.
- Kagiso eventually approached High Priestess of the Masali family with an offer to govern Chanda. As a servant to the goddess Sei, she had refused to take sides had stayed calm during each meeting.
- Priestess Masali accepted the offer and swore to govern without bias and has since both been in charge of the House of Sei within Samil and the governing of the Chandali province.
